Contents and the story timeline

The navigation panel shows one list in reading order: the book's contents together with story layers. Select any row to jump there. When a book has characters, the Timeline and Characters tabs at the top switch between this list and character cards.

What appears

  • Chapters and the publisher's table of contents, plus pages the contents does not list.
  • Beats: one-line story events from the book's Book Guide. Selecting one jumps to the passage and briefly highlights it.
  • Recaps: summaries of a chapter, section or whole work. With Beats on, a recap opens and closes with its arrow.
  • Marks: your highlights, emoji marks, notes and bookmarks.
  • Chats: Book Guide conversations started from a passage, shown as Chat with the first question.
  • Cast: where each character first appears. Select one to open their card. Off by default.

Turn layers on and off with the Recaps, Beats and Marks chips. More timeline filters has Cast, Chats and Full book.

Spoiler protection

Beats, recaps and cast appear only up to how far you have read; a recap's text appears once you finish the stretch it covers. Past that point the timeline line turns dotted. Full book shows everything until you reload the page.

Your place

A Your place divider follows your saved position and marks where the book will reopen; select it to bring that position into view. While you are peeking ahead, it stays where you were reading. The list follows along as you read. Scroll it yourself and the divider waits at the top or bottom edge of the list, whichever way your place lies; select it, or scroll your place back into view, and the list follows again. While you peek, the edge marker reads Reading here and leads to the page you are on.

Jumped from here marks each spot you left with a jump; select one to go back there.

When beats and recaps are missing

Beats, recaps and cast come from a book's prepared Book Guide. Without one, or while it loads, the timeline shows chapters, contents and marks only, and may say Book Guide is unavailable. Chapters and marks still work normally. For your own uploads, see Book Guide for your uploads.
