Highlights, marks and notes
Marking a passage
Select text in a book. A toolbar called Selected passage appears with:
- Highlight colors: yellow, blue, pink, or a subtle underline.
- Emoji marks: question (?), important (!), insight (bulb) and favorite (heart).
- Note: adds a note to the passage. The note editor opens in the navigation panel.
- Discuss and Define, which open the Book Guide, and, for a character's name, Who is this?, which opens their card in the navigation panel. See Asking about a passage.
Press Escape to clear the selection. To bookmark a whole page, use the bookmark button in the header, Mark current page.
Only colored highlights are drawn in the text. Emoji marks, notes and bookmarks show in the timeline. Some older browsers cannot draw highlights in the text; they still appear in the timeline.
Finding your marks
Open the navigation panel. With the Marks layer on, the timeline lists every mark in reading order: its note, or the quoted text in its highlight color. Select one to jump to the passage.
Editing and deleting
- Select the pencil, Edit note, to write or change a note. It saves as you type and when you press Escape. Notes can be up to 4,000 characters.
- Hover a mark, or edit it, to show Mark options: change the emoji or color (select the current one again to clear it), or delete the mark.
Across all your books
In My Books, the With notes filter lists every book with notes or Book Guide chats. Open a book to see its notes.
Signed in, marks and notes sync to every device. As a guest they stay on this device until you add the book to your account after signing in.
