Reading a book

Scroll or Paged

Choose how pages move in Settings under Flow. In a book, Aa opens Settings beside the page.

  • Scroll reads in one continuous column. It is the default.
  • Paged turns one screen-sized page at a time.

Flow is saved on this device only. Books with vertical writing can only be read in Scroll; Paged shows Switch to scrolling.

Turning pages in Paged

  • Keyboard: Page Down or Right Arrow goes forward; Page Up or Left Arrow goes back. Right-to-left books reverse the arrows.
  • Swipe left or right.
  • Tap the left or right edge of the page on a phone or narrow window. Taps do not turn pages on a wide desktop window.

Page keys are ignored while text is selected or while you type in a box. A wide table that scrolls sideways uses swipes for its own scrolling.

Progress

The footer shows how far you are, such as 42% chapter · 18% book.

The two side panels

  • The button at the top left, Open book navigation, shows the book's title, the contents and timeline, search, the Aa button for Settings and your account. Its arrow, Back to My Books, leaves the book.
  • The button at the top right, Open book guide, opens the Book Guide.
  • The question-mark button beside it, Help, opens ManyNote Help beside the page.
  • The bookmark button in the header, Mark current page, bookmarks the page.

On a wide screen the panels sit beside the page, and you can drag a panel's edge to resize it (double-click the edge to reset). If both do not fit, the Guide floats over the page; click the page or press Escape to close it. On a phone, one panel opens at a time as a drawer.

Focus mode

Press f, or choose Enter focus mode at the bottom of the navigation panel, to hide both panels. Press Escape or open a panel to leave it.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • f: focus mode on or off
  • b: back to where you were before a jump; Shift+B goes forward again
  • Escape: clears a selection, then closes a drawer or floating panel, then leaves focus mode
  • Page Up, Page Down, Left and Right arrows: turn pages in Paged
  • With a panel edge focused, Left and Right arrows resize it

Links, footnotes and images

Footnote and endnote references open a popup when the book identifies them as notes. Long notes scroll inside it without changing your reading place. Close it, press Escape, or follow its return link to go back. Links to another note open there too; Back to previous note returns to the earlier note.

Choose Open in book, or follow a link to an ordinary passage, to jump there. Other links inside the book also jump to their destination; use Back in the header, or press b, to return (see Your reading place). Links to websites open in a new tab and show the site name. Images follow your Theme's Book images setting. There is no image zoom yet.
