Talking with the Book Guide

The Book Guide is a conversation about the book you are reading. Open it with the button at the top right of a book, Open book guide. Talking with the Guide needs an account; guests can open the panel and are asked to sign in when they send a message.

Asking

Type in the box and press Enter, or select the send button. Shift+Enter adds a new line. The panel shows Reading with you… while it answers. Questions can be up to 4,000 characters.

A new conversation shows the current chapter, what the Guide can see, and a few starter questions, such as What just happened?. Select one to ask it. Under the name at the top of the panel, a line says what the Guide knows: Knows the book up to your page, or with Full Book, Knows the whole book.

Questions about ManyNote

The Guide and characters answer questions about the book. If you ask one how to use ManyNote, such as how to make the text bigger, the answer says so and offers Ask ManyNote Help. It opens Help beside the page with your question in the message box, ready to send.

No Spoilers and Full Book

Choose a mode with the button at the bottom left of the message box, Spoiler mode: No Spoilers:

  • No Spoilers (the default) answers only from what you have read, up to the end of the page you are on.
  • Full Book can discuss the whole story, including later events and the ending. In a collection it is called Full Work. The first time you choose it, the Guide asks Allow spoilers?; choose Use Full Book or Keep No Spoilers. While it is on, the button is highlighted.

The mode is remembered in this browser. Messages from beyond your current page, or from Full Book while you are in No Spoilers, are hidden.

Citations

Answers show small numbers for the passages they rely on. Hover or select a number to see the passage and its chapter, then Go to passage → to read it.

Chats and history

  • New chat, the pencil button at the top of the panel, starts a fresh conversation.
  • Conversation history, the clock button beside it, lists your conversations with the first question and message count. Select one to continue it, or Back to chat to return.
  • Conversations cannot be renamed or deleted one at a time. Erase reading data… in Settings deletes everything for a book, including conversations.

Dictation

Select the microphone, Start dictation, speak, then Stop dictation. The text is added to the box so you can edit it before sending. Your browser asks for microphone permission the first time.

When an answer fails

Retry asks again. If the panel says the conversation uses an earlier book context, choose Start new conversation; your question is kept. For usage limits, see Book Guide usage limits.
